The list below attempts to serve two purposes:
- Describe an "orientation" process we recommend for new Associate Editors
- Offer an overview of the several possible ways that Associate Editors’ roles might be structured
As we work with new Associates, this list will no doubt evolve. For now, though, we are suggesting that new Associates work through items #1-4 as preparation for #5, an online meeting with Susan and Glenn.
- Schedule a time to meet with Susan and Glenn via WebEx, to discuss the following
- Susan will send available times in an email message
- Identify Interests (CompPile is currently "organized" by field journals, monographs, and edited collections. Our primary goal has been to provide comprehensive bibliographic coverage or journals / books. You can see several ways we listed coverage up till now: <https://innovationtest2.colostate.edu/comppile/original-about/coverage/ >.)
- Consider areas of interest that you might want to focus on; journals you may be responsible for; research areas represented by journals or book publishers; etc.
- Consider how much time you can commit to this work.
- Some work will be administrative (emailing, record keeping) and some will be intellectual (identifying keywords, fixing submissions, finding relevant scholarship).
- Learn More about CompPile: Inventory, Prioritize
- Graze / review CompPile’s current coverage in that area / those areas (include the glossary in this process to identify keywords that might be associated with area of interest, to explore how well keywords identify items and how well they may map the area / field):
- what’s missing in terms of journals;
- what journals are not current;
- what book publishers’ lists / back lists do we need to mine
- for monographs and
- edited collections.

- Consider Options for Scope of Responsibility
- Journals (Journal editors may agree to send tables of contents or access to new issues as they are published. Using this information or accessing the issue ourselves, we index complete issues.)
- What journals are currently represented but need to be updated?
- What new journals can / need to be added
- Publishers (Publishers can be contacted for tables of contents to assist in indexing. Some publishers may be willing to provide access to review copies.)
- Monographs
- Edited collections
- Book series

- Talk to Glenn & Susan via WebEx
After our conversation: beginning the work and thinking about the future.
- Processes, Routines, Tools / Support
- The best way to learn about the database is to do some indexing yourself, so pick something and use the template to create a set of entries.
- Once you’re more familiar with what’s needed, you can reach out to editors/publishers and/or recruit others to do bibliographic work for you.
- Based on the results of your grazing, how might you / we recruit field bibliographers to help with indexing? How can we recruit more journal editors / book publishers to share TOCs or review access / copies?
- Publicize, Accountability
- How could we encourage more uses of CompPile, suggesting ways that the index itself could provide topics for discussion / further exploration / publications?
- How many ways could we keep our disciplinary community aware of what’s happening at CompPile, regularly?
- Monthly WebEx meetings for full Editorial Group
- Possible face-to-face meetings at regional and national conferences
- Future
- How can the site be more useful (design, functionality, etc.)?
- What current entries need keywords; how might we find ways to annotate more of the entries (including by adding abstracts); what gaps are you seeing in the glossary.
- And more, we hope.
