2478. Naficy, Hamid (Ed.). (1999). Home, exile, homeland: Film, media, and the politics of place. London: Routledge.
Annotation: Global changes in capital, power, technology and the media have caused massive shifts in how we define home and community, leaving redrawn territories and globalized contexts. This interdisciplinary study of the media brings together essays by accomplished critics to discuss the way film, television, music, and computer and electronic media are shaping identities and cultures in an increasingly globalized world. Ranging from intensely personal to highly theoretical, the contributors explore our complex negotiation of 'home' and 'homeland' in a postmodern world. Contributors: Homi Bhabha, Thomas Elsaesser, Rosa Linda Fregoso, Teshome H. Gabriel, George Lipsitz, Margaret Morse, David Morley, John Peters, Patricia Seed, Ella Shohat, and Vivian Sobchack.

2481. Najimy, Norman C. (ed.) [project director]. (1981). Measure for measure: A guidebook for evaluating students' expository writing [reprint of pamphlet published by the Massachusetts Department of Education]. Urbana, IL: National Council of Teachers of English.
Annotation: Najimy describes "holistic scoring" and recommends it for class use. The description fits standard Educational Testing Service methodology: sample papers are used to get a notion of the 1-4 scale; two independent scores more than a point apart are read by the person "appointed chief reader" (p. 7). Najimy notes that a holistic reading is efficient, requires "consensus among scorers," instigates good discussion among readers, and "usually stresses positive aspects of students' writing" (p. 7). [This last was standard advice to readers of Advanced Placement essays: see Vopat, 1981.] In class the process involves just scoring of papers 1 to 4, no training, and afterwards a discussion of criteria (accuracy, clarity, organization, etc.). Najimy says that this holistic method is adapted from the Basic Skills Assessment: Manual for Scoring the Writing Sample (Educational Testing Service, 1977). [Najimy's pamphlet is a reprint of one published by the Massachusetts Department of Education.] RHH [Rich Haswell & Norbert Elliot, Holistic Scoring of Written Discourse to 1985, WPA-CompPile Research Bibliographies, No. 27]
