Annotation: Engages with the increasingly pressing issue of labor conditions in academia, with particular focus on the challenges faced by contingent faculty members. Spotlights the critical problem of contingent faculty members comprising a substantial portion of the instructional workforce and the consequent corporatization of higher education, highlighting the prevalence of one-year contracts and lack of job security. Evaluates the content, structure, and contributions of its subject with emphasis on the interconnectedness of five key threads discussed therein: professionalization, local changes in workload and pay, self-advocacy, organizing, and protection of gains. Further emphasizes the link between exploitative labor conditions and the hindrance of professional identity and growth, and argues that these conditions lead to professional isolation and stagnation, stressing the materiality of professionalization and its connection to advocacy and organizing efforts. Highlights the importance of solidarity across different stakeholders, including faculty, administrators, and tenured faculty. Underscores the subject’s suggestion that faculty must form coalitions to express their own interests and forward key ethical considerations, moving beyond a "rhetoric of despair" and focusing instead on practical steps for change. Suggests the subject as a prime example of a text with the potential to reach a broader audience outside the academic sphere, including students, their families, and the general public. (Kyle Morris)
1906. Kahn, Seth; JongHwa Lee (Eds.). (2011). Activism and rhetoric: Theories and contexts for political engagement. New York: Routledge.
Annotation: This volume examines the role of rhetoric in today's culture of democratic activism. The volume takes on two of the most significant challenges currently facing contemporary rhetorical studies: (1) the contested meanings and practices of democracy and civic engagement in global context, and (2) the central role of rhetoric in democratic activist practices. In presenting a variety of political and rhetorical struggles in their specific contexts, editors Seth Kahn and JongHwa Lee allow contributors to reflect on and elaborate possibilities for both activist approaches to rhetorical studies, and rhetorical approaches to activist projects, facilitating better understanding the socio-political consequences of this work.
